Windows 7/10 Defender related Registry Edits

I got Windows 7 and 10 running in a VirtualBox on a Mac mini, and the Windows Defender does not behave very well on a system with limited resources.

1. Windows 7 - enable security updates without installed anti virus software

Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ create the new key QualityCompat, then create the 32bit value named cadca5fe-87d3-4b96-b7fb-a231484277cc and leave 0 as its entry.

2. Windows 10 - disable Windows Defender

Here, Windows 10 1803 is running in a VirtualBox on a Mac mini, and Windows Defender (aka Security Essentials on Windows 7) brings the whole system down to a crawl. In order to disable the Windows Defender, create at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender\ the 32bit value named DisableAntiSpyware and set it to 1, then restart. Once disabled, Windows 10 behaves as snappy as Windows 7 in the VirtualBox.
